This two-lesson set explores why more women are choosing to build full, independent lives outside the traditional “couple and family” model. In the Vocabulary Lesson, learners study the difference between single, alone, lonely and solitude. They also learn expressions such as decentre romantic relationships, live on your own terms, psychologically rich life and singles tax, along with idioms like left on the shelf and dusty relic. In the Reading Lesson, learners read a magazine article with real stories of women who live single by choice. The lesson covers social pressure, housing costs and cultural expectations about marriage, and ends with a team debate. Use the lessons together: the vocabulary prepares learners for the article, and the reading gives them the ideas to discuss.
