Why are more women choosing to live single, and what does it really mean to be alone? This vocabulary lesson explores the difference between single, alone, lonely and solitude, then introduces useful expressions such as decentre romantic relationships, live on your own terms, psychologically rich life and singles tax. Learners also work with idioms like left on the shelf and dusty relic to see how language reflects social attitudes toward single people. The lesson ends with speaking tasks, including a planning activity where learners design their ideal life. It is based on an article from Cosmopolitan, which is linked in the lesson.
