Do you check your phone mid-conversation, feel guilty when you do nothing or always multitask? This lesson starts with a quick self-check and a question to name this state of mind: constantly rushing even when there is no emergency. Students then read an article from Happiful on “hurry sickness”: what it is, who coined the term, why it is not an official medical condition and why chronic time urgency may still affect our health. A true/false/not given task checks careful reading, and discussion questions ask whether modern society sees “doing” as the only sign of a valuable person and who is expected to rush most (parents, students, corporate employees). The language work is built on the article: 5 words (inexplicable, implore, ramification, stark, non-negotiable), 5 phrasal verbs (turn out, be wrapped up in, be geared towards, be tied up in, step away from) and everyday phrases such as mental load and serial rusher. Group discussions about stepping away from the phone and making free time non-negotiable lead to a final debate: “If you aren’t constantly busy, you aren’t trying hard enough.” The article is read through the link or QR code, and the answer key is included.
