Who were the first Black people in Canada, and why does the whole country spend a month remembering them? This lesson introduces Black History Month through a few short, simple stories: a navigator who arrived in the early 1600s, long before Canada was a country, people who were denied freedom and those who fought for it, and the ordinary citizens who turned February into a national month. Each story is a mini-text with two quick questions, so beginners get real history in small, manageable steps. Students first warm up with key words (history, celebrate, freedom, important), then read, put events in order and decide what is true. They end by comparing with their own country: is there a history month at home, and who is an important person in their country’s story? Answer key included.
