Why do families clean the house before the new year, and why is red everywhere? Students watch a video about Lunar New Year and discover the meaning behind the traditions: sweeping away bad luck, red as a symbol of luck and joy, dragon and lion dances, red envelopes for children and a cycle of 12 zodiac animals. Key words (ancestor, fortune, tradition, zodiac, lantern, envelope) are pre-taught, and students practise them through two viewings, multiple-choice, matching and gap-fills. The lesson ends with a discussion: which tradition do they find most interesting, is there a similar celebration in their culture and why is it important to keep traditions alive, even far from home? Answer key included.
