Students explore why Canadians wear a red poppy and pause at 11:00 on November 11. After comparing how their own countries honour historical events, they learn 6 key words (veteran, sacrifice, armed forces, honour, silence, battlefield) and use them in a fact file about the Battle of Vimy Ridge. A reading covers the end of the First World War, John McCrae and his poem In Flanders Fields, and cenotaphs, followed by discussion questions and true/false. The lesson closes with a “one word” reflection. Additional materials (about 15 minutes) take the class deeper into the poem: students listen to a reading of In Flanders Fields and discuss who is speaking, what images stand out and how the mood changes. They then focus on the final stanza and choose a statement to defend (“The poem glorifies war,” “The poem is a warning about war,” or “We should always remember soldiers who died in wars”), supporting their opinion with a line from the poem. The full text of the poem is included as an appendix. Answer key included.
