An upper-level lesson on how one day and one battle shaped a national story. Students predict from four clues, then watch a video and answer 8 multiple-choice questions (purpose of the day, why November 11, Vimy Ridge, poppy symbolism, ceremonies, inference). They learn 6 advanced words (commemorate, valiantly, catalyst, sovereignty, solemn, cenotaph) and use them in a passage and a discussion about solemn traditions. Groups finish by designing a three-panel mini-exhibit (history, symbol, tradition), pitching it to the class and voting for the best. Additional materials (about 15 minutes) take the class deeper into the poem In Flanders Fields: students listen to a reading and discuss who is speaking, what images stand out and how the mood changes. They then focus on the final stanza and choose a statement to defend (“The poem glorifies war,” “The poem is a warning about war,” or “We should always remember soldiers who died in wars”), supporting their opinion with a line from the poem. The full text of the poem is included as an appendix. Answer key included.
