Halloween
Students trace Halloween back to its origins. They share costume memories, build a Halloween word bank from 10 photos and guess true or false before reading. They learn 8 key words (harvest, bonfire, lantern, mask, ancient, tradition, spirit, immigrant) through photos and gap-fills. A simplified text from The Canadian Encyclopedia covers the Celtic festival Samhain, All Hallows’ Eve, soul cakes, the start of trick-or-treating and how the pumpkin became a jack-o’-lantern. Students tick the topics, answer detail questions, put events in order and compare with their own country. A closing speaking task asks about holidays, fires, food and costumes. Answer key included.
