What makes someone a hero? This lesson tells the story of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope: 42 km a day on a prosthetic leg, from St. John’s, Newfoundland, with only $400, until the cancer spread to his lungs near Thunder Bay. Students first learn 11 key words (diagnose, amputate, prosthetic, determination, legacy, ambitious, coast to coast and more) through matching and gap-fills, then watch a video about what makes Terry a Canadian hero. They answer detail questions, put the events in order and decide what is true or false (including how $24 million became $850 million through the annual Terry Fox Run). Discussion questions at the end explore how Terry must have felt, what words describe him and whether he succeeded, even though he did not finish his run. Answer key included.
