Why does Canada have a long weekend in May, and what do Canadians do with it? A beginner-friendly introduction to Victoria Day starts with the question every long weekend raises: what do you want to do? Students choose between camping, a picnic, shopping or a quiet weekend at home, then learn 7 key words (holiday, queen, long weekend, fireworks, parade, celebrate, tradition). In a jigsaw reading, one partner has the history (Queen Victoria and 1867) and the other has the traditions (cottages, gardening, fireworks, the “unofficial start of summer”), and they must ask each other questions to complete their texts. The lesson ends with a lively group task: plan the perfect long weekend within a budget, with a goal for each group (Adventurers, Relaxers, City Explorers) and a list of priced activities. Answer key included.
