Canada
Why does Canada celebrate the birthday of a British queen? Students trace Victoria Day from the 63-year reign of Queen Victoria and her role in Confederation in 1867, which earned her the title “Mother of Confederation,” to today’s barbecues and fireworks, a blend of history and modern lifestyle. They learn 8 history words (to reign, to honour, to rule, to shape, expansion, development, roots), skim a short article for the best summary and decide what is true, false or not given, correcting the false statements. In a paired activity each student holds fold-over question cards (the Historian and the Cultural Guide) and scores points for good answers. A fast-finisher challenge asks pairs to rename the holiday for modern Canada, and a debate with a ready-made toolkit of phrases (honour historical roots vs. change holidays to match modern culture) ends the lesson. Answer key included.
