Can a holiday outlive the meaning it was created for? This upper-level lesson uses Victoria Day as a case study: a tribute to a queen’s birthday, then a symbol of colonial ties, now the unofficial start of summer, and the subject of a growing debate about renaming it “Victoria and First Peoples Day” to support reconciliation. Students discuss how holidays shape national identity, learn 10 advanced words (metamorphosis, legacy, vestige, marginalized, burgeoning, facilitate, pivotal and more) and practise word formation in context. They read a dense text on how the day’s focus has changed, answer true/false/not given and open questions and then take part in a structured class debate for and against renaming the holiday, followed by reflection on which arguments were most convincing, whether anyone changed their mind and whether a compromise is possible.
