An upper-level lesson built on the Psychology Today article “5 Reasons We Enjoy Being Scared”. Students rate how they feel about horror films, haunted houses and scary games, predict reasons from the title, skim for ideas and identify the author’s purpose. A true/false/not given task with paragraph evidence checks detailed reading. Then they rank the five reasons (the safety net, the flood, self-satisfaction, closeness with others, curiosity) with personal examples. They also learn 10 expressions from the article (a rush of adrenaline, subside, endure, make it through, push the envelope, seek thrills, scared out of my mind, get into the spirit of, pun intended, a sense of relief), then practise them through matching, collocations, gap-fills and a bank of 11 discussion questions. The article is read through the link or QR code, and the answer key is included.
